Dynamic performance benchmarking in conservation: a pathway for Brazil

    Published: 17th September 2025

This report proposes a “Dynamic Performance Benchmarking” approach, which updates counterfactuals at each monitoring period by comparing conservation project outcomes against matched reference areas, using publicly available disturbance data and robust statistical testing.

Modelling forest growth a practical benchmark for SOCIALCARBON projects

    Published: 12th August 2025

This report evaluates whether the annual aboveground carbon (AGC) increment rates used in SOCIALCARBON projects are ecologically consistent, by benchmarking them against regionally parameterised Chapman-Richards growth curves and spatial predictions from The Nature Conservancy’s Carbon Accumulation Explorer.

Embedding Biodiversity Monitoring into Nature-Based Solutions

    Published: 13th June 2023

The loss of biodiversity is considered one of the most pressing environmental issues facing the planet today. It has far reaching consequences for ecosystems and society in general.

This paper assesses the need for biodiversity monitoring for successful nature-based solutions, outlining the models available and how SOCIALCARBON approaches biodiversity.

Protecting nature through wastewater treatment - A methodology to accelerate the implementation of wastewater treatment plants.

    Published: 21st June 2022

Today, an estimated 80 percent of global wastewater is being discharged untreated into the world’s waterways. The impact of which includes: a loss of ecosystem services and economic opportunities; spreading of “Dead Zones” impacting fisheries, livelihoods and the food chain; and health impacts due to waterborne diseases.

This paper outlines an approach to use climate finance to accelerate the implementation of wastewater treatment plants in developing countries.

  • Cover page with a photo of a rhinoceros in a grassy area and a blue sky. The text reads, 'Financing conservation in the long term'. Financing conservation in the long term - the need to look beyond REDD+ and towards incremental carbon stock growth.

    Published: 25th October 2022

In this paper we examine the core components of REDD+, results achieved so far, criticisms, and assess whether it offers a long term solution for conservation finance.

In addition, we recommend a hybrid approach, using REDD+ as a solution to address deforestation and degradation at pace, and then transitioning to conservation based projects thereafter.

Conserving areas of biodiversity importance - A methodology to transform conservation financing.

    Published: 6th June 2022

Biodiversity is under threat across the globe and so is conservation. New financing models are required to scale global conservation activities to avoid the collapse of ecosystems.

This paper proposes a new methodology under the SOCIALCARBON Standard to quantify the carbon removals achieved through conservation activities, whilst embedding community and biodiversity co-benefits.
