Peru officially recognises the SOCIALCARBON Standard under RENAMI
Recognition includes SCM0006, Social Carbon’s methodology for the conservation of areas of biodiversity importance, creating a new pathway for eligible conservation projects in Peru

London, UK - 17 July 2026
Social Carbon today announced that Peru’s Ministry of Environment—Ministerio del Ambiente, or MINAM—has officially recognised the SOCIALCARBON Standard within the framework of the country’s National Registry of Mitigation Measures, known as RENAMI.
The recognition includes SCM0006: Methodology for the Conservation of Areas of Biodiversity Importance, Social Carbon’s science-led methodology for quantifying greenhouse gas emission reductions and removals generated through conservation activities.
The recognition was formalised through Directoral Resolution No. D000004-2026-MINAM-VMDERN-DGCCD, issued on 14 July 2026. The resolution recognises four certification standards and seven methodologies for calculating greenhouse gas emission reductions or increased removals under Peru’s RENAMI framework.
Recognition of the SOCIALCARBON Standard and SCM0006 means eligible conservation projects applying the methodology may seek registration within RENAMI, subject to the applicable project-level assessment, registration and authorisation requirements.
Supporting high-integrity conservation in Peru
SCM0006 supports conservation projects implemented in areas recognised as important for biodiversity. It provides procedures for quantifying climate benefits generated through conservation interventions while requiring projects to address biodiversity, communities, safeguards, monitoring and long-term environmental integrity.
The methodology has been developed to support credible nature-based climate action by combining rigorous greenhouse gas accounting with the wider environmental and social outcomes needed to ensure conservation delivers lasting impact.
“Peru’s recognition of the SOCIALCARBON Standard is an important validation of our science-led and integrated approach to nature-based climate action,” said Mike Davies, CEO of Social Carbon.
“The inclusion of SCM0006 creates a credible pathway for conservation projects in Peru to seek registration under RENAMI while delivering measurable benefits for climate, biodiversity and local communities.
“Peru contains ecosystems of immense environmental and social importance. Mobilising finance for their conservation requires methodologies that are scientifically rigorous, transparent and capable of demonstrating that projects are delivering genuine outcomes. These principles sit at the heart of the SOCIALCARBON Standard.”
Alignment with Peru’s carbon market framework
RENAMI is Peru’s national monitoring, reporting and verification framework for mitigation measures. It records and monitors mitigation activities and their associated greenhouse gas emission reductions and removals.
The framework covers mitigation measures supporting Peru’s nationally determined contribution, voluntary carbon-market activities and cooperative approaches under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
RENAMI is intended to strengthen transparency and legal certainty, prevent double counting and ensure that registered mitigation measures comply with applicable environmental and social safeguards.
Recognition of a standard or methodology does not automatically register an individual project or authorise the international transfer of its mitigation outcomes. Projects must continue to satisfy the relevant RENAMI procedures and project-level requirements.
Next steps
Social Carbon welcomes engagement from Peruvian project developers, communities, landholders, investors and technical partners seeking to understand how the SOCIALCARBON Standard and SCM0006 may be applied within the RENAMI framework.
The official resolution is available through the Government of Peru’s legal documents portal.
