Social Carbon Foundation Unveils Insetting Framework to Drive Sustainable Value Chain Transformation
May 23, 2025
London, UK – 23rd May 2025.
The Social Carbon Foundation proudly announces the official launch of Version 1.0 of the SOCIALCARBON Insetting Framework, following an extensive public consultation period and expert stakeholder engagement. This final release marks a significant advancement in the global effort to implement transparent, science-based, and socially inclusive insetting practices within Forest, Land, and Agriculture (FLAG) value chains.
This framework offers a robust certification and reporting structure for organizations seeking to reduce their Scope 3 emissions through direct interventions in their own value chains—ensuring environmental integrity, community benefit, and credible emissions accounting.
"The publication of Version 1.0 signals the end of consultation and the beginning of implementation," said Mike Davies, CEO of the Social Carbon Foundation. "With this framework, we offer companies a clear path to embed climate action where it matters most—at the heart of their operations and supply networks."
Key Features of the Framework
The Framework builds on the SOCIALCARBON Standard and includes several key features:
Scope 3 Quantification: Provides detailed procedures for measuring and certifying GHG emission reductions and removals from interventions within supply chains—even in cases where traceability is limited.
Defined Supply Shed Methodology: Introduces the concept of “Supply Sheds” to credibly attribute emissions outcomes even when exact sourcing origins are unknown.
Supported Interventions: Includes agroforestry, sustainable agriculture, afforestation, and regenerative land management, aligned with validated SOCIALCARBON methodologies such as SCM0005 and SCM0009.
Rigorous Claiming Rules: Emission reduction claims are linked to traceable sourcing, requiring proof of sourcing and causality from companies seeking to make climate claims.
Transparency & Registry Integration: All emission reductions and associated claims are tracked through the SOCIALCARBON Portal, with verified reductions issued as non-transferable SOCIALCARBON Insetting Units (SCIUs).
Safeguards & Deforestation Compliance: Projects must comply with EU Deforestation Regulations and other safeguards while maintaining alignment with the SOCIALCARBON Standard.es and do not cause harm
Bridging the Gap Between Ambition and Implementation
The SOCIALCARBON Insetting Framework directly supports companies committed to decarbonizing their supply chains and aligns with emerging global principles, such as those laid out in the Call for Action: Principles for High-Integrity Insetting in the FLAG Sector (Conservation International et al., 2025).
In doing so, it provides a practical pathway for businesses to:
Make verified Scope 3 claims,
Strengthen community-based climate action,
Mitigate environmental risks through credible interventions,
Contribute to long-term regeneration of ecosystems and livelihoods.
