First Ever Issuance of SOCIALCARBON Credits from South-East Asia
The SOCIALCARBON Standard is pleased to announce the first issuance of SOCIALCARBON credits from South-East Asia. The project, located on the island of Sumatra is a run-of river hydro project developed by South Pole Carbon Asset Management Ltd (www.southpolecarbon.com) and certified with the Verified Carbon Standard (www.v-c-s.org) and the SOCIALCARBON Standard (www.socialcarbon.org).
The project not only provides emission-free power in a remote area in Indonesia but will also use the additional revenue from the carbon credits, among other social initiatives, to provide free medical treatment for locals in nearby villages (Silalahi and Parbuluhan) and will be used to make regular donations of thread and electricity to support the local tradition of weaving-an important source of income for women in the region.
The full press-release, with further project details, published by South Pole Carbon Asset Management can be found at: http://www.southpolecarbon.com/_downloads/PR110705_354SocialCarbon.pdf.
We look forward to seeing the SOCIALCARBON Standard expand to more countries in the future and hope that the social benefits from this project activity serve as inspiration for current and future projects.
